broken. noisy brawl. peevish. apt to cause trouble.
Fractal ‘fraktel/ is my sum up word for 2017. It’s a relatively new word originating in the 1970s from the French verb frangere – ‘broken’.
Although it describes a random and chaotic phenomenon with turbulence, it encompasses – and here’s what I love – crystal growth and galaxy formation…
Pure creativity.
No doubt 2017 has been a fracted year filled with factious fracases on many fronts. But with the turbulence comes growth – that galaxy formation part.
I’m grateful for sharing the ongoing journey of creativity and growth with you and look forward to a galaxy of wonderful possibilities throughout the new year.

2018 will be… ULTRA
Violets are such a humble flower. And this year Pantone Color Systems have determined that we’ll be seeing Ultra Violet… well… everywhere. Violet, a deeply powerful color, helps our awareness and potential (personally and globally) soar to a whole new level. It embodies intuition and spiritual reflection – both much needed in the world today – and can help light our way to great things to come.

COLOR OF THE YEAR
We know Pantone because we live and breathe design. Pantone is both a design and a household name thanks in part to their eagerly anticipated Color of the Year announcements.
This year Pantone searched color-use in fashion and interior design through print and web design and determined Greenery – aka Pantone 15-0343 – will be de rigueur for 2017.
Greenery can be described as a bright, yellow-green… it is a fresh, new growth green that evokes hope that springtime brings.
Green isn’t called for all in every situation, but we like the idea that we’re seeing shades of prosperity, growth, and perhaps a sense of restored balance, through the year ahead.
peace, calm, quiet
Somewhere back in the 1200s, peace replaced Old English frið which also meant “happiness.”
We really like this idea of happiness as the root of peace.
In 2017 we hope you find your deep and abiding peace… a happiness filled with calm and quiet in heart, mind, and soul.

WINTER WISHES
Winter brings to mind cold days, colder nights, bright fresh mornings with glittering dew and frost.
Gazing out the office window, winter brings to mind bright, clean, sweet… in the form of a 45 year old orange tree. This time of year holds the promise of sweet, juicy fruit. Tall glasses of fresh pressed juice at break time.
Each day throughout the year, I watch this fruit change outside my window. They start as white, sweet blooms in Spring. The blooms fall away leaving dark green peas, that grow into green marbles, and then into golf balls as the Summer passes. By Fall, they reach their full size and their color begins to shift from pale green to yellows. With Winter’s approach comes the fulfillment of these beautiful fruit.
It’s the stages of a design project… all rolled into one lovely tree and kilos of sweet fruit.

WAS THAT A LEAF?
Although the weather and temperatures are still more summer than fall, yesterday a falling leaf grazed my head. Really. Leaves. Falling. In northern California.
For years fall has been a favorite season and this is why. Hot summer brings extremes… getting chilled with air conditioning or crushed with the outdoor heat. Fall brings with it balance… light and dark, heat and cool. The falling leaves are there to help remind us that something has changed. And it’s time to shift our focus.
